We were out at Balboa pier two weekends ago and hooked up with my biggest catch so far! Well, that's aside from the small whale I incidentally hooked into there earlier in the year, but that's another story...
Anyhow, Steph was catching smelt and mackerel so I was trying to use the smelt for a halibut. I didn't have any luck so I put on a small mackerel she caught, which people usually only use for large sharks and rays. I let it sit there for awhile, but I was thinking the mack was too big and I was going to change it out when it hit:

It fought pretty good but I was able to get it close to the pier. I'm not used to catching anything like this so I didn't know how to handle it. Luckily, two guys helped me out, grabbed a net, and helped me pull it in and get the hook out. We didn't want to try to eat it and the guys who helped me didn't want it either, so it was thrown back.

It's called a shovelnose guitar fish and it's really strange looking. It seems like a mix between a shark and ray, but it's considered a fish.
And on a side note, I didn't realize how crazy people get when when you hook into something bigger. There was a crowd and they got right on me and walked over all of our stuff.
Anyhow, that was my story from two weekends ago.
